The 80s-inspired, high-waist denim/crop top looks that have been dominating the casual trends for the last 2 seasons don’t appeal to everyone. For those that want something new, comfortable and fresh the choice is either the much-discussed athletic trends, or the favorite classic American utilitarian look. Think Woolwich workwear with a lighter-weight, more feminine and modern cut for everyone from juniors through contemporary sportswear, featuring classic buffalo plaids and pocket details. We continue to see this look at Abercrombie (ANF), American Eagle (AEO), and Aéropostale (ARO), as well as department stores and mass merchants. The look is classically layered with denim shorts or distressed denim, and paired with everything from hipster- to Southwestern-inspired accessories.
We’re continuing to watch how this look performs at retail and the percentage of floor space used to promote it relative to the other apparel trends that drive business.
